Object Story |
William D. Henderson was a Scottish-American lithographer who opened the Henderson-Achert Company in Cincinnati in 1885. The company mostly produced lithograph advertisements for breweries. After a fire, he bought Krebs Lithography Company in 1890, renaming it Henderson-Achert-Krebs, before renaming it the Henderson Lithographing Company in 1896. The Henderson Lithographing Company continued producing advertisements and maps, as well as smaller commercial products under the name Henderson Line. They were purchased by the Strobridge Lithographic Company in 1925, and the Henderson name continued to be used until 1930. This piece was likely produced in the mid-1920s. This bridge set was owned by the family of Charles and Stella Walters, and was held in their playroom alongside many other toys. Charles was born January 13, 1879, and Stella Grace Wagar was born August 19, 1884. The couple were married in Lennox and Addington County January 16, 1906. They proceeded to have three children, Allan, Charles Jr, and Margaret Walters. The playroom included a variety of board games and toys. The heavily used state of many toys in the playroom shows that their original owners enjoyed them very much. Charles and Stella Walters founded the Charles Walters Dance Orchestra in 1916. They played local events in many different venues, including the mess hall of the Royal Flying Corps at Camp Mohawk, where they performed with world-famous dancers Irene and Vernon Castle. They were most popular for playing dance pavilions between Kingston and Belleville. At its height the band included several saxophones, a violin, piano, percussion, banjos and trumpets. Band members included Ted Daverne, Floyd Martin, Robert Harold D. McGreer, William L. Normile, Reginald Smith, and Charles' son Allan J. Walters. Charles passed away June 11, 1963 while Stella lived until July 6, 1978. |
