Cast iron picture frame, shaped like a multi-style castle or manor house, with turrett, gables and balcony. This picture opening appears to be a large open window in the centre gable. Remains of dull green paint on font. The back is open with loops to accommodate wire stand flanking opening. |

Picture frame was donated by Evelyn Margaret Cook, author of many children and young adult novels, as well as two non-fiction books, several poetic texts, and radio and screen plays, which she wrote under the name Lyn Cook. She was born May 4, 1918, in Weston ON In 1927 her family moved to Toronto. After graduating high school, she attended the University of Toronto, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1940, and her BLS in 1941. Through 1941 and 1942 she worked as a childrens Librarian at the Whychwood branch of the Toronto Public Librarian. She joined the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. She worked at the British Commonwealth Air Training Base north of London ON, as a meteorological observer. It was during these long shifts that she wrote and published a single poem under the name Margaret Culverhouse. Over the next few years she self published three poetry books. After the second world war, Lyn relocated to Trenton ON where she met another member Royal Canadian Air Force Rob John Weddell. In 1946 both Rob and Lyn left the military. Lyn moved to Sudbury ON where she started a radio show called "A Doorway in Fairyland", which was later picked up by CBC. To continue creating the show for CBC Lyn Returned to Toronto. She stayed with the show for four years. Lyn Married Rob September, 1949, after which the pair moved to Scarborough. Lyn began writing and publishing children's stories, while continuing writing radio programs. She continued publishing novels for several decades. She eventually moved to Westport, to be with her daughter, Deborah. On July 14, 2018, after her 100th birthday, Lyn passed away. In 1966 Lyn published the book "The Secret of Willow Castle" set in the early 1830's which centers around a young girl named Henrietta MacPherson. The book is set in the historic MacPherson House located in Napanee ON. |
