Object Story |
Edmund D. Wright was a member of the Adolphustown & Fredericksburg community, and was born December 21, 1920, being raised by Archibald and Lillian Wright. Edmund would go on to enlist with the 32/34 Royal Canadian Artillery Field Battery during the Second World War, and was mustered to the 2nd Light Anti-Aircraft Battery in the 14th Field Regiment in the Royal Canadian Artillery. After a stop in the United Kingdom, Sergeant Wright would be deployed to the beaches of Normandy, France during D-Day. Wright would survive the conflict and return to his home region and marry Ruth Duffet, giving birth to two daughters, Susan and Sherry. Wright, after the war, found himself as the treasurer of South Fredericksburgh Township, as a real estate agent, and as a farmer. Edmund Wright would pass away on September 21, 1968. The patches tell us small and large details about Edmund's career in the military. The 14 RCA patches indicate that he was a member of the 14th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. The French grey rectangular patches located below the "CANADA" patches indicates that his regiment was part of the division troupes of 3rd Canadian Division. The three connected chevrons with the cannon above it indicates that he was a Sergeant as opposed to the lesser rank of Lance Sergeant which would have three separate chevrons and no additional decoration above. The chevrons on the proper right sleeve have a second layer of laurel wreath around and "S" with a crown, possibly indicating that he had reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, though were unable to confirm this as of 2022. The final badge located on the forearm on the proper right side, is an upside down stack of chevrons with one white chevron below 4 red ones indicating that he already had a year of pre war service, and four full years of war service as indicated by the red chevrons. The Ribbon bars present on the proper left breast of the jacket sit there in place of the corresponding medal. Moving out from the midline of the jacket the first ribbon represents the 1939-1945 Star, the second ribbon represents the France and Germany Star, and the third on the outer edge of the jacket represents the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with a maple leaf clasp indicating 60 days of service outside of Canada. |
