These medals were given to Charles D. Sills who was born January 28, 1896 to Albert Martin Sills and Sophia Withers. He was raised on him family farm in Gretna in Lennox and Addington County. He attended Albert College in Belleville. With the outbreak of the first world war, Charles left college and signed up, and served as a gunner with the Canadian Army's Fourth Division. He also served with the artillery at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. After WWI he joined the militia and passed the military Staff course in Kingston. He became the commanding officer of the 47th Artillery Battery in Napanee.He studied Pharmaceuticals in Toronto as well, graduating in 1922. in 1923 he married Mabel Grumbell. In the 1930's he opened Sills Drugs on Dundas Street in Napanee. He became a Major and served in Petawawa as a general Staff Officer. Due to his age, in World War II, he was not able to serve over seas, instead he served at the Halifax garrison, in the anti-aircraft battery at Citadel Hill He operated his drug store in Napanee until the earl 1970's when he retired with Mabel to Toronto. Throughout his life in Napanee he was an active member of the community, he was a member of Trinity United Church, the 127 Royal Canadian Legion, as well as a member of the Masons and the Napanee Housing Authority. Charles passed away December 13, 1987. |
