Object Story |
This coat and its matching 3 piece suit was tailored by J. L. Boyes and Son merchant tailor in Napanee sometime between 1900 and 1940. Jason Lester Boyes was born the first son to Mary (nee Richard) and Robert Boyes, a carriage maker, on October 15th, 1857. When Jason was 19 he began work as a telegraph operator at Dominion Telegraph in Kingston. When he was around 24, Jason married his first wife Emma Louis Shirley, swiftly divorcing her before 1884. In 1884 Jason married his second wife, Charlotte Grace Smith. A year later the couple had their son Frank Shirley Boyes. Jason and Frank opened their tailoring shop around 1900 in Napanee. The two continued their work until Frank passed away in 1936 at the age of 51. It is unclear if the tailoring shop remained open beyond his death. Seven years later Jason also passed away at the age of 86. The two are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Napanee. |
