Has hand-written pencil text, hard to make out: "2 studs of papa's + Aunt Julie's Pearl." Hand-written pen text on bottom of base: "Schermerhorn." |
Object Story |
Hooper's Drug Store, 1904-late 1930's, formerly the corner of Dundas and Centre Streets. It is believed that this was the first lighted sign in downtown Napanee. Frederick L. Hooper born in Newburgh in 1872. In 1902, Frederick and his brother Samuel leased Lot 10, the south-east corner of Centre and Dundas streets, from William Detlor for $400 per year. Frederick married Maude Garrison April 2nd, 1904 in Bowmanville In 1911 William Detlor sells Lot 10 to Frederick for $10,000. A mortgage is extended in 1920 to Frederick and Maude for the west part of the block. By 1938, Hooper is no longer listed as a Druggist in the "Napanee Business Directory". In 1946, the property was sold for $11,000 to William T. MacKenzie. |
