Object Story |
This quilt once belonged to the Babcock family, and consists of a cathedral window pattern stitched entirely by hand. Each block uses reverse appliqué, where four fabric squares are folded in on themselves diagonally and stitched to four background squares to create a central diamond shape on a square block. A smaller colourful diamond is then added to the centre, and the edges of the larger diamond are folded over its edges. These blocks are then joined together to create an interlocking pattern of diamonds framed by circles. The weight and volume created by the layered blocks reduces the need for quilted batting. |
