Worn by either brother; Captain Harry Salsbury or Sergeant Carman R. Salsbury during World War I. Harry Edwin Salsbury was born in Camden Township, July 28, 1896 to Albert Salsbury and Effie Alberta Edgar. He enlisted February 5th, 1915 with the 4th Infantry Battalion. At the time of enlistment Harry was a student. Starting out in the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a private. He spent three and a half years fighting on the Western Front, particularity in France. During Harry's time in the military he was wounded four times and gassed. This gas would lead to his untimely death from tuberculosis. He was also awarded the Military Cross July 26, 1917 and the Bar for the Military Cross October 18, 1917. The Cross was awarded to him for his gallantry in leading a charge against the German field guns; the bar was added for daring and resourcefulness in reconnaissance work behind enemy lines at Hill 70, thereby breaking up five successive enemy counter-attacks. By the time Harry returned to Canada he was a captain. Sadly February 8, 1921, at the age of 24, Harry Passed away. Carman Russel Salsbury was born July 21, 1898 to Albert Salsbury and Effie Alberta Edgar. He grew up in Camden Township with his family. He enlisted March 6, 1916 with the 146th overseas battalion. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, November 15, 1918. Between the wars Carmen had a family and became an assistant professor at Queen's University. He enlisted in March of 1940 with the rank of Major. He served until August 13, 1945. After the second world war Carmen served in the militia with 8th Technical Regiments between 1950-1957. After he moved to British Columbia as Chief Clinical Medical Officer, Workmen's Compensation Board of British Columbia, until 1965. He passed away, in Vancouver, September 19, 1979. |
