Object Story |
In 1936, veterans of World War One returned to Vimy Ridge. This piece was brought home by Oswald Sculthorpe of Napanee who served 11 months in France and was once wounded in the leg. The area around Vimy Ridge is rich in underground chalk deposits, and the troops' trenches and dugouts were excavated from this soft white stone. During the preparations for the operation, extra care had to be taken in disposing of the excess chalk from the many tunnels being dug toward the German lines, as the dust was brightly visible against the dirt and mud of the trenches. Given to Jame Wilson, father of Lorena, by Mr. Tommy Sculthorpe who served in WWI - James Wilson's eldest son,Uriah has a shoe store on the south side of Dundas Street, Napanee where the Mom's restaurant now is. |
