Object Story |
Deck chair from the Steamer "Quinte" that burned. Chair was found floating on the bay by Mr. R. B. Shipman and Mr. W. D. Vanalstyne. The Quinte was the flagship of the Rathbun fleet built in 1871 at Montreal and brought to the Bay of Quinte service in 1886. After only three years she perished in one of the Bay of Quinte's most terrible disasters. She was entering Long Reach bound for the Picton when caught fire and burned to the waterline. Captain Christie heroically saved 19 of the 24 passengers. Among those who perished were Captain Christie's own mother and young brother. In 1915 the bones of the Quinte still lay where she had been grounded by brave efforts James Collier, on the Fredericksburg shore of the Long Reach, close to the township boundary. |
