Object Story |
The woman in the photograph is Melissa Jane Warner (nee Garrison), the brooch belonged to her daughter Florence Luella. Warner, during her time mourning her mother. Melissa was born August 30, 1855 to George and Mary Barbara Garrison in Upper Canada. At the age of 6, in 1861 the family were living in Camden. The 1871 census the family consisted of Melissa and her parents as well as an older brother Cyrus (b.1851) and a younger sister Luella Garrison (b.1870). November 22, 1876 Melissa married Augustus Coleman Warner; they were planning on living in Colebrook once married. Augustus was a 35 year old merchant from Camden. By 1891 they had created a family of their own with one son and five daughters; Arther H. (b1878), Estella E. (b.1881), Georgia M. (b.1884), Belva A. (b. 1886), Florence L. (b.1886), and Mary Beatrice. (b.1891). The pair had one more child in 1894, named Hattie, who died a year later. In 1911, most of the family were still living together in Camden Township with the exception of Arther who may have moved to Moose Jaw, and Estella who had passed away the previous year. The family home had however acquired a new addition; Melissa's mother Mary Barbara Garrison had joined the household. Augustus passed away July 16, 1916, followed by Melissa Jane December 25, 1919. |
