Object Story |
Walter Stevens Herrington was born on July 14, 1860, son of Stillman M. Herrington (1831-1906) and Caroline Morden (1834-1895) of Ameliasburgh. On his maternal line he can trace back his roots to several Loyalists. His grandparents were John Howell Morden (1804-1877) and Mary Mason (1813-1893) who married in 1832. John was son of John Morden UE and wife Eve Bowman. John Morden UE was son of Joseph Morden UE (1744-1777 member of KRRNY) and Lucretia Lauriana Howell. Joseph had settled in Canada from near Philadelphia and died in Montreal, and his wife was a sister to Major John Howell of Butlers Rangers. Eve Bowman was a daughter of Jacob Bowman UE (1737-1815, member of Butlers Rangers) and wife Elizabeth, also Loyalist settlers. Walter graduated from Victoria University in 1883 and then studied at Osgoode Hall. He was called to the bar in 1886 and became Queen's Council in 1898. He was a partner in the law firm of Herrington, Warner & Grange in Napanee for many years. In 1890 he was married to Maria Tilley. Walter and Maria had three children: Helena, Caroline and Harold. In addition to his law practice, he was an active member of St. Mary Magdaline Church in Napanee, active in Liberal politics, and served as Master of the Masonic Lodge. He died in 1947 and was buried in Napanee. Walter is most remembered for his historical researches and activities. From 1897 to 1947, he served as chairman of the Napanee Public Library, and from 1916 to 1947 was President of the Lennox & Addington Historical Society, having been one of the organizers of both groups. Judge Smith refers to Herrington as "one of the most gifted and versatile men in Lennox and Addington County" He was the author of several books on the region and is best remembered for his History of the County of Lennox and Addington, published in 1913, still a standard reference for the area, and co-authored The War Work of Lennox and Addington, published in 1922. For his historical research and work in the Quinte area, Walter Herrington was inducted into the Loyalist Hall of Honour. |
