Object Story |
Moscow Railway Station was part of a rail line built in 1889 from Yarker through to Tweed. This line was built under the charter of 'The Napanee, Tamworth and Quebec Railway', which was Incorporated in 1879. They changed their name to 'Kingston, Napanee and Western Railway Company' in 1890. In 1896 the company amalgamated with the "Bay of Quinte Railway and Navigation Company' to become the 'Bay of Quinte Railway Company'. This company was acquired in 1914 by the 'Canadian National Railway Company'. In 1917 the control of the 'Canadian National Railway Company' was passed to the Dominion Government where it, as well as other government run rail ways operated under the title of 'Canadian National Railways'. This rail line going from Yarker to Tweed was 33.94 miles in length (54.62km), and passed through the villages of: Moscow, Enterprise, Tamworth, Erinsville, Marlbank, Larkins, and Stoco. This line is recorded as having offered a mixed service at least in it's final five years of operation. In 1940 paperwork including a 'Canadian National Railways Proposed Abandonment' form was sent to Ottawa. The line was being proposed for abandonment due to large loses of revenue combined with the large cost of maintaining the line in safe condition. April 17, 1941 the abandonment was approved by 'The Board of transport Commissioners of Canada', specifically Hugh Wardrope. |
