Object Story |
This wool coat was worn by Lieutenant Margaret Walters during the Battle of Britain while serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp (RCAMC). Margaret Elizabeth Walters was born to Charles Walters and Stella in 1914. Margaret was raise in Napanee alongside her two brothers Allan and Charles. Between 1934 and 1935 she was trained at the Toronto General Hospital School for Nurses and earned her certification. During WWII, Margaret was a nursing officer in the RCAMC serving in both Canada and Europe. In 1941, while in England, Margaret married Frank L. Shipp and remained there for the remaining duration of the war. In the following years the couple had their three sons Peter Walters Shipp, Douglas Frank Shipp and Stuart Charles Shipp. The family then moved to Massachusetts and later to Berkeley, California where Margaret became a nurse. Margaret passed away in 1981 at the age of 67. Her husband, Frank, passed away 4 years later in 1985 at the age of 73. |
