Object Story |
The Herring Glass Works, active 1881-1883, was a project of local entrepreneur John Herring, who established the factory during the years of John A. Macdonald's National Policy as a way of getting around excessive import tariffs on American glass. Archaeological investigation at the site revealed that although Herring's glassworks were producing mould-blown glass, no evidence of pressed glass was found. Pressed glass was the more conventional method of producing candlesticks. Whimsy such as glass canes and ladles, were produced at the end of the day, using any leftover materials at hand. |
