Object Story |
This hat is attributed to the Denison family. Based on when the hat was in style and its potential purpose, it likely belonged to Phyllis J Denison who was born in 1920, and would later marry into the Gerow family. This style of half-hat was popular in the early to mid 1950's. During this period the hats could be used for both day and evening wear and could be decorated with such things as sequins, veils, or in this case flowers. These half-hats were often worn by brides in the mid 1950's, around the same time that ballerina length wedding dresses were in style. Arthur Harris Imports Inc. is still in business today and primarily makes veils for both weddings and funerals. It is still located in Toronto Ontario, where it was based out of when this hat was purchased. Due to the off white colour of the half-hat and the business leanings of the company who made it, this could have been a hat worn for a wedding. |
