Military Cross with Case. Silver metal cross. The tip of each arm on the obverse has the imperial crown, the center features the Imperial cypher of King George V. The reverse is plain with the recipients name, rank, unit, relevant location, and date of the award engraved across the horizontal arm space. Medal attached to the ribbon by a metal bar. Ribbon is white with a purple stripe down the middle. There is a metal top bar with a pin located at the top of the ribbon. Carrying case is rectangular in shape with the front edge rounded like an arch. Exterior is a textured material deep purple in colour. Lid has a gold outline of the cases shape surrounding a gold crown. Lid opens on a metal hinge located at th back edge of the case. Lid is kept shut by a small metal push latch located at the front of the case. Interior of lid along with hinge are covered with off white silk. Case is filled with a beige velvet cushion with indents for the top bar and for the cross to keep them in place. |
Object Story |
This medal was awarded to Arthur Bertram Fennell for his service in World War 1. He was born in Napanee ON, July 16, 1881. Before volunteering for the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) he was working as an assistant registrar at the University of Toronto. He was of the rank of Lieutenant, his unit was Canadian Engineers, Second Division, Signals Corps. He was fighting in France when he became disabled due to Carbuncle, but was eventually approved to return to service. He won the Military Cross for maintaining telephone communication during the battle of Hill 70 which was a ten day battle in August of 1917 in France. In total he was in France for 19 months. He was part of the Siberian expedition. After the war he resumed his position at the University of Toronto. Commissioned Officers of substantive rank of Captain or below were could be awarded the military cross. Prior to 1920 the requirements for receiving the cross was to show distinguished and commendable service in battle. |
