Bed coverlet, hand woven, linen and wool, blue and white overshot design interrupted by horizontal gold and white woven stripes, two panels hand stitched together. |
Object Story |
This is a hand woven coverlet, once belonging to the painter Manly E. MacDonald (1881-1971). The coverlet is made with an overshot design, a popular style throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century, characterized by an undyed warp and weft contrasted with a coloured weft, in a repeating abstract pattern. In this case the undyed yarn is linen, and the blue is wool. The gold of the stripes separating the overshot pattern is also wool. |
