Object Story |
This wool jacket was handmade by Allie Brown as a part of her "going away" outfit for her wedding day in 1903. Mary Alma "Allie" Brown was born in Deseronto in 1878 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown. While in Deseronto, Allie worked as a seamstress at a tailor's shop. On December 23rd 1903, Allie Brown married Robert S. Wales whose father was the Napanee fire chief, Robert J. Wales. Robert S. Wales was a local grocer at the Wales' store and worked there until he retired in 1945. In the meantime Robert and Allie had two daughters Alma and Marrion Wales before 1909, after which they moved to the Wales' homestead at 120 Adelphi St. in Napanee which was built by Robert's father. During her life Allie was an active member of Grace United Church, a charter member and noble grand of the Queen of Sheba Rebekah lodge, and a charter member and third ever worthy matron of the Napanee chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also served as an executive of the Lennox and Addington County Children's Aid Society. Robert S. Wales passed away in 1948 followed by Allie in 1957 following which the two were buried in Riverside Cemetery. Their first daughter, Alma moved to Collingwood and married William A. Prentice in 1934 after which she began teaching at the Collingwood high school for 5 years. The couple had two sons, Richard Prentice and Dr. Robert Prentice. The two then moved to Napanee in 1953 where they stayed until their deaths. The couple and their sons were buried in Riverside Cemetery survived by Alma's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their second daughter, Marrion, remained unmarried and taught in schools in North Bay, visiting her sister during the summer until she passed away in 1991. |
