Object Story |
This shovel was built by William Duncan Van Alstyne [Vanalstine] for his daughter Hazel. William was born in 1864 in Ontario to Joseph Van Alstyne and Elizabeth Tenniel. In 1896 on December 30, William Married Loretta A. Brown. They lived on a property located on Palace road in Napanee. On January 31 1898 they had a daughter, Hazel Loretta Van Alstyne. Hazel would have been around 6 or 7 years of age when her father built her this shovel. At 23, Hazel had left her home in Napanee and was working as a school teacher in the Village of Bath. It is known that the ancestors of the Van Alstyne were from Ysselsteyn Holland. These ancestors came to North America circa 1620 with the Dutch West India Company. They settled on the island of Manhattan, before later migrating north to the County of Lennox and Addington. |
