Object Story |
The Daly's, Denis (Sr). and Maria, immigrated to Canada from Ireland around 1840. They made their home near Picton where they raised four sons and one daughter. According to oral tradition Denis (Sr). was a farmer who, beginning in 1851, returned from selling produce in Montreal with his wagon filled with chests of tea to sell to local farmers. After Denis (Sr.) passed away in 1855, his sons acquired various lands that they would farm around Napanee. Two of the sons Edward and Charles kept the tea business going however, upon the death of Charles and one other brother George, the remaining sons Denis Jr. and Edward continued expanding the tea business with "Edward and Denis's Tea Merchant Business" located at the corner of John St. and Market Square. Here they sold groceries and wholesale tea. In the 1890's Edward moved to London, Ontario to try and establish his own tea company. Denis continued to run the business with various family members. While in business the Daly Tea Company prided itself on high standards of quality and the ability to meet the unique tea blend needs of each customer. For a time they were able to expand their business to other parts of Ontario and farther west. In 1921 they moved to a larger building on the south east corner of Dundas St. and East. St in Napanee. By the 1930's Daly's was having trouble competing with standardized pre-packaged blends sold by other, larger companies. The second world war made staying in business even more difficult through reduced ability to trade, goods being rationed, and reduced consumer spending. |
