Object Story |
Large grain shovel (length of 1.2 meters) used on the Vanalstine farm in North Fredericksburgh during an unknown period. The Vanalstine family owned land in Fredericksburgh, concession 7, lot 22 beginning when James Vanalstine (Jr.) purchased the north west 1/4 of the lot. James was born in 1832 to James Vanalstine (Sr.) and a currently unidentified mother. James (Jr.) married Sophy Crouch, and together had several children including Frank Leslie Vanalstine who was born in 1873. Frank purchased 1 acre of lot 22. The land of James (Jr.) is assumed to have passed to Frank who upon his death the land transferred to his wife Marion McBain Vanalstine (nee Gentle). Marion was born in Scotland around 1882. The couple had two children Vera (b.1910) and Russel (b.1912). Land records indicate that the land was inherited from the Marion Vanalstine estate by her son Russel Vanalstine, the donor of the grain shovel. It was on this land that the grain shovel was used. Though it is unclear if the two sets of land were connected, it is know that a second lineage of the Vanalstine's owned land on the same lot as the line of James Vanalstine (Jr.). 50 acres of land was purchased by William Vanalstine April 7, 1856 along the north east quarter of lot 22, concession 7, Fredericksburgh. Followed by the purchased of 50 more acres on the same lot, in 1869. William Vanalstine was born around 1816 in Ontario. He married Hannah Treadway sometime before 1851. Hannah was born December 9, 1825 to Emanuel and Mary Ann Treadway. Hannah and William had six children, 4 daughters and two sons. William and Hannah lived until May 16, 1891 and February 17, 1884 respectively. The land was inherited in 1891 by the couple's first born son Willet Vanalstine. Willet was born December 27, 1849. He married Mary Amelia Howell October 6, 1884 in Hastings Ontario. Mary was born March 24, 1854 in Prince Edward County to Sarah Scott and James J. Howell. The couple appears to have remained childless throughout their lives. Willet died September 20, 1925, Mary Amelia lived 10 years, longer in Lennox and Addington County, until July 18 1935. |
