This housecoat was made by Joseph Milton Limited Clothing in Toronto, Ontario and then worn by William Gutzeit. Dr. William H. Gutzeit was born in 1878 likely in Toronto. When he was 33, William married Mabel Victoria Fairfield in 1911 in Toronto. While in Toronto William graduated as a Doctor of Music and became an accomplished organist, composer and choir director. In 1938 the couple purchased the Fairfield House in Bath, Ontario (now a historic house) which was built by Mabel's great-great grandfather. The couple hosted many community and personal events before William died in the house in 1949 at the age of 71. Mabel continued living in Bath for 19 more years before passing away in 1968 at the age of 87. The two are buried together in Belleville Cemetery in Belleville, Ontario in Mabel's family plot. |
