Object Story |
This Royal Canadian Artillery Jacket was worn by Bill Sands during his service in World War Two. William Herbert Sands was born on July 9th, 1925 in Bath, Ontario. When Bill was 21 years old, he enlisted in the 6th Field Regiment in Kingston on October 14th, 1942. Bill was trained in Petawawa and Cornwall and then was shipped overseas on the Queen Mary. While overseas he served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Canada in 1945 and was discharged in Kingston on February 22nd, 1946. For his service Bill was awarded a 1939-1945 Star (for 6 months of service in the army), a France and Germany Star (for at least 1 day in France, Belgium, Holland or Germany between D-day and May 8th 1945) and a Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with a Silver Bar (for 18 months of service with 60 of those days occurring overseas). Bill then married his wife Anna Cronin Baker and settled down in Bath, Ontario. The couple had 4 children: Linda, Margie, Bert and Rae. In his free time Bill aided the Lennox and Addington Historical Society in their efforts to record veteran accounts of World War Two although he passed away before the manuscript was complete. Anna passed away in 1982 at the age of 58. Bill passed away 18 years later on December 20th, 2000 at the age of 75. The two are buried together in Bath United Church Cemetery. |
