Infantry puttee (matching puttee is 1979.c65.01). Long strip of woven olive-green wool, pointed at one end. Pointed end has a black label with gold embroidery "FOX//WELLINGTON SOMERSET//F.I.P. PATENT [14214?]-1909". There is a long cotton strip attached to the pointed end of the puttee, which wraps around the puttee for storage. The other end is squared off and is pinned with a small brass medallion with the letters "L//FOX". |

Carman Russel Salsbury was born in Camden Township July 21, 1898 to John Albert Salsbury and Effa Alberta Edgar. Before enlisting with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Kingston March 6, 1916, he worked as a farmer. He enlisted at 17 years of age in Kingston Ontario with the 146th battalion. His attestation papers say that he was 5.5 feet tall, with blue eyes and light hair. His unit sailed from Canada on the S.S. Southland September 25, 1915, they arrived in England October 6, 1916. October 7, 1916 he was transfered to the 95th Battalion. Carman is marked as also having been part of the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. While fighting in France Carman received 2 gun shot wounds to the arm, as well as bronchitis. He was discharged due to demobilization August 18, 1919. For his efforts in World War One Carman Received two medals; the Distinguished Conduct Medal November 15th, 1918. After World One Carman received his M.D. and became an Assistant Professor at Queen's University. Through photo documentation it is known that Carman had a wife and at least one daughter. March 28, 1940, Carman re-enlisted as a Major. He served until August 13, 1945. In 1945 he received the Efficiency Decoration. After the Second World War ended he continued to serve with a militia from 1950 to 1957. He left the military and decided to move to British Columbia where he held the position of Chief Clinical Medical Officer, Workmen's Compensation Board of British Columbia, until 1965. He passed away September 19, 1979. |
