Object Story |
This rocking chair was made by the great grandfather of Louise Wills (nee Evans). Her great grandfather was Williams Evans who was born in 1822 in England. Sometime before 1845 he immigrated to Canada. February 25, 1845 he married Mary Anne Amey (1827-1920) in Camden East. The couple had 7 children, of which Levi Sagar Evans was the third. Levi was born January 18, 1854 in Camden Township. He married Emma Anne Stewart, whose father, Israel Stewart, worked for the Gold Horn Mining Company. Emma and Levi married on March 9, 1887, in Desmond Ontario. Together they had a single child, William Everett Evans, in Camden Township, August 18, 1895. The family continued to live in Camden Township, on a farm on Concession 4, lot 48. William Everett Evans married Mary Emily Huffman (1894-1964) June 26, 1918, in Morven, Ernestown Township. William Everett Evans's daughter donated this chair to the museum collection. William Evans, the maker of this chair, died in 1898. It is believed that he had planned on making chairs for his descendants, but passed away before this task could be completed. |
