Object Story |
This toy dust pan belonged to Hazel Loretta Van Alstyne. She was born January 31 1898, meaning this toy may have been made in the early 1900's. Her parents were William Duncan Van Alstyne (b. 1864) and Loretta A Brown (b.1865). They lived in a house on palace Road in Napanee. It is known that William made several toys out of wood for his daughter such as a doll house and a shovel. By the age of 23, Hazel was living in the village of Bath and working as a school teacher. From around 1900, tin toys were available in Canada as imports from other countries who had been making them for decades such as Germany, and the United States. Tin was a favoured metal to make toys out of as it was cheap, durable and easy to work with. A large variety of toys were made out of tin such as wind up animals, and means of transportation such as boats, train and cars, however pieces such as this dustpan were not a commonly favoured toy. |
