Object Story |
This is a small crazy quilt, which may have been used as a coverlet or throw. It was donated to the museum by Mr. and Mrs. Vosper, in connection with the Grange family. The patches are in various fabrics including cotton, silk, and velvet. Decorative embroidery that integrates flower and vine motifs connect the erratic patches. A few of the patches have hand-embroidered images on them, including flowers, rings, a wheel, and a butterfly. Glass beads are stitched onto a few patches as well. This quilt was made in the late nineteenth century, likely shortly after the 1898 Camden Agricultural Fair, a ribbon from which is integrated as one of the quilt patches. Because of this ribbon, the quilt was likely made by a woman in the Camden East region. Two embroidered overlapping circles suggest wedding rings, so this may have been a wedding gift. |
