Object Story |
This tunic was made for the Canadian Army Medical Corps uniform by the Rowes clothing company. The Canadian Army Medical Corp began as an administrative corps in 1904 initially divided into the permeant (regular) and non-permanent (reserve) divisions. In 1919, the regular division of the corps was given the title of "Royal" with the reserve division gaining the title 17 years later officially becoming the Royal Canadian Army Medical Reserve (RCAMC) in 1936. In 1968, the corps was integrated into the Canadian forces and the RCAMC name was officially deactivated. This particular tunic was worn by Margaret E. Walters during her service in WWII. Margaret was born to Charles and Stella Walters (two of the founding members of the Walters Orchestra) in 1914. Margaret was raise in Napanee alongside her two brothers Allen and Charles. Between 1934 and 1935 she was trained at the Toronto General Hospital School for Nurses and earned her certification. During WWII, Margaret was a nursing officer in the RCAMC serving in both Canada and Europe. In 1941, while in England, Margaret married Frank L. Shipp and remained there for the duration of the war. In the following years the two had their three sons Peter Walters Shipp, Douglas Frank Shipp and Stuart Charles Shipp. The family then moved to Massachusetts and later to Berkeley, California where Margaret became a nurse. |
