Object Story |
This quilt was donated by Hazel VanAlstyne (b. 1898), the first curator of Lennox and Addington County Museum. Hazel was born in Napanee and grew up on a property on Palace Road with her parents William Duncan VanAlstyne (b. 1864) and Loretta A. Brown. Hazel attended Napanee Collegiate Vocational Institute and was a member of Grace Methodist Church. She went on to attend Queen's University, as part of the class of 1926, and became a teacher in Bath. Embroidered on the quilt that Hazel donated are the names of Lennox and Addington County residents. Signature quilts like this were often part of fundraising efforts for community organizations. Hazel was a member of the Red Cross during World War II, so it is speculated that this quilt is connected to the organization, made to support the war effort. |
