Winter weight men's riding breeches in khaki wool serge with cotton lined waist and slit pockets. Fitted waist flares to knees then narrows to fitted calf. ?oles in lower leg and gathered by lacing-cotton cord with metal aglets, metal eyelets. Waist has 6 plastic buttons facing inside and fly front fastened with 4 buttons and heavy metal hook-n-bar. knees are reinforced with suede. Hand finished. Top edge piped with dark brown. |

These riding breeches were worn by Dr. Carmen Salsbury during his service in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps during WWII. Carmen Russell Salsbury M.D was born the youngest son to Effa Alberta Edgar and John Albert Salsbury on July 21st, 1898 in Camden East, Ontario. On March 6th, 1916, when he was just 17, Carmen enlisted in the 146th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. 6 months later he was transferred to the 95th Battalion. It is also possible that during his service that Carmen served with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles as well. On November 15th, 1918 Carmen was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal for overtaking an enemy gun and saving his mortally injured commanding officer in the middle of battle. He was officially discharged on August 18th, 1919. After the war Carmen continued his education in Canada as well as the United States before finally landing an assistant professor position in the anatomy department at Queen's University in Kingston after completing his M.D. It is also during this period that Carmen married Amy Alice Malakowsky in 1927 followed by the birth of their only daughter, Sylvia. On March 28th, 1940 Carmen enlisted into the Royal Canadian Medical Corp and served with the regiment until August 13th 1945 earning himself a Canadian Efficiency Decoration for 20 years of service. After the war Carmen served in the militia with the 8th Technical Regiment in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers between 1950 and 1957. He and his family then moved to British Columbia where Carmen was appointed the Chief Clinical Medical Officer of the Workmen's Compensation Board of British Columbia which he worked for until 1965. Carmen passed away at the age of 81 on September 19th, 1979 in Vancouver British Columbia. There is a memorial for him on his parents' grave in Camden East Anglican Cemetery in Camden East, Ontario. |
