Object Story |
Although not a direct match, the maker of this dress was clearly inspired by the traditional outfit of Loyalist women that emigrated from the United States during and after the American Revolution to remain loyal to the British Crown. The material itself was made by the Cranston Print Works Company which was established on Rhode Island in 1807 and continues to distribute material across the world today. This costume was worn by Peggy Allison as a part of a matching costume with her husband, Harold Allison, during the celebration of the bicentennial landing of the loyalists in Adolphustown in 1784. Peggy Heathcote was born in 1918 and Harold Alwyn Allison was born in 1915. The two soon married in 1939 in Adolphustown where they both grew up. Within the next couple decades Harold and Peggy had both a son and a daughter, David and Diane. Harold was a large contributor to the Adolphustown community through his work as a reeve and councilor for the township. During 1984, when the bicentennial was taking place, Harold was the Warden of Lennox and Addington County indicating why the two were big contributors to the festivities. Harold passed away in 1996 at 81 years old. Peggy and likely Harold were buried in the Allison Mausoleum on Shore Road in Adolpustown. |
