War medal. British War Medal. Silver circular medal attached to a striped blue, white, and orange ribbon. Obverse of medal features King George V, seen from a side profile, no crown. Obverse has words "Georgivs V BRITT OMN REX ET IND: IMP" just inside the outer edge of the medal. Reverse of medal features St. George on a horse with a sword, the horse is trampling the Prussian shield along with a skull and cross bones, finally there is a sun just to the proper left of the midline and the dates 1914-1918. |
Object Story |
This medal was awarded to Arthur Bertram Fennell for his service in World War 1. He was born in Napanee ON, July 16, 1881. Before volunteering for the CEF was working as an assistant registrar at the University of Toronto. He was of the rank of Lieutenant, his unit was Canadian Engineers, Second Division, Signals Corps. He was fighting in France when he became disabled due to Carbuncle, but was eventually approved to return to service. He won the Military Cross for maintaining telephone communication during the battle of Hill 70 which was a ten day battle in August of 1917 in France. In total he was in France for 19 months. He was part of the Siberian expedition. After the way he resumed his position at the University of Toronto. |
