Object Story |
These pants were worn by Lt.-Col. Gordon Macgregor during his service in the Royal Canadian Artillery. Gordon Whytock Macgregor was born to Alexander Macgregor (1876-1961) and Charlotte Weatherspoon Whytock on November 23rd, 1910. When he was just 13, Gordon enlisted in the Frontenac Regiment on October 15th, 1923 where he was later commissioned in 1932. When Gordon was 25, he married Fannie Lucretia Waddell on July 3rd, 1935 after which the two settled down in Napanee. In 1936, when the Frontenac Regiment was disbanded, Gordon was remustered into the 47th Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. In December of that same year he was posted to the reserve of officers. In 1941, Gordon enlisted in the 3/47th Field Battery (RCA) who he served with for the duration of World War Two in Canada and overseas. When he returned to Canada in 1946, Gordon took over command of the 47th field battery. 2 years later, in October, Gordon was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and was given command of the 9th Anti-Tank Regiment. For his service Gordon was awarded a Military Cross (for commendable service), a 1939-1945 Star (for 6 months in army or navy plus 2 months of active air crew during WWII), a France and Germany Star (for 1+ day of service in France, Belgium, Holland or Germany between D-Day and May 1945), a Defense Medal (for 6 months of service in Britain in WWII), a Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (for 18 months of service in WWII) with a Silver Leaf (for 60 days out of those 18 months occurring overseas), a War Medal 1939-1945 (for 28 days of service during WWII) and finally, a Canadian Efficiency Decoration (for 20 years of commendable service). Gordon and Fannie remained in Napanee for the duration of their lives. |
