Object Story |
This quilt was made by the students of the Tamworth Continuation School around 1942 as a fundraiser. The idea was originally suggested by the Tamworth branch of the Red Cross. The Red Cross provided the quilt blocks to the students who were supposed to acquire names to be embroidered onto the quilt for approximately 10 cents each. When the students had finished embroidering the flowers and names onto their quilt block, the women of the Red Cross in Tamworth finished assembling the quilt. After this, a draw was held of every name that was on the quilt, and the winner of the draw got to keep the quilt. The Quilt was won by Cora Reid (nee Gray). Continuation schools such as the one in Tamworth were started in the 20th century as a way to make further education more available in rural communities. A continuation school was an elementary school, also known as a common school, which offered secondary grades as well. The Tamworth Continuation School was built in 1911, and officially opened June 13, 1912 though it is thought that classes may have started before this. Originally there were four classrooms to teach public school in and a total of four forms for high school. In 1924 a fifth form was taught in high school, and an additional two classrooms were added. The continuation school taught secondary school students until 1966, after which all high school students attended Napanee District Secondary School. The building was demolished in 1974. |
