Object Story |
Family tradition indicates that the original owner of this first aid kit containing the four splints was William Edward Vine. William Edward Vine was born March 6, 1883 in Lennox and Addington County to William Vine (Sr.) and Eliza Saul. In 1891 at the age of 8 William Edward Vine was the youngest child in the family with four older sisters. 10 years later in 1901, at the age of 18 William was living with his parents along with 3 of his sisters. At the time he was working as a packer in a farm factory. January 13, 1904 at the age of 20 William married Carrie Wilson in Lennox and Addington County. Carrie was 23 at the time of the marriage. William and Carrie had their first son Harry William Vine, August 25, 1904 in the town of Napanee. In 1911 the young family were living in Napanee, with William working as a shipper, likely at the Gibbard Furniture Lumberyard, the census for this year recorded that he worked 60 hours a week. Carrie Vine (nee Wilson) is noted as being an active member of the community, working with the Order of the Eastern Star, Grace United Church, and the Ladies Aid Society. In 1921 it is thought the family was living at 23 Bridge Street in Napanee. William Edward Vine died December 2, 1948 in Napanee, and is buried in Riverside cemetery. Harry would have been 16 years of age in 1921 and was still at school. He married Edith Elizabeth Sexsmith December 28, 1929 in North Fredericksburgh. The pair had two children, William Vine (the 3rd with this name in 4 generations) and Ann Vine. Harry was a very prominent member of his community. He began working with the Napanee Volunteer Fire Department in 1923, and continued volunteering with them until 1966. Harry worked at Gibbard Furniture between the ages of 15 and 27, during this time he also operated a taxi business, rented boats, and ran a battery charging service. At the age of 27, Harry became a partner in a coal company with Mrs. Irene Gilbride. Overtime he bought out Mrs. Gilbride's share of the company, and took over several other fuel and coal companies, including the Perry Coal Company. This Business would become the Napanee Fuel and Supply Co. He was also active in Napanee's political scene. In 1945 and 1946 he was a council member in Napanee. 1947, he became Deputy Reeve of the Lennox and Addington County Council. Harry was Reeve in 1948 as well as 1949 and was the mayor of Napanee in 1950 and 1951. Harry served as the Province of Ontario's representative on the Napanee Region Conservation Authority since it was established in 1957. He was also chairman of the Napanee Public Utilities Commission at the time of his death but had been a member for 11 years previously. He was a member of the Masonic Order, and was a member of the Rotary club for more than 25 years, and was president at the time of his death. Harry passed away January 22, 1969 due to injuries received in a motor vehicle accident January 8th, 1969. His obituary was published in the Napanee beaver January 29, of that year. The first aid kit was passed down to Ann Vine, daughter of Harry Vine. She attended Napanee Collegiate Institute, where her year book notes that she played volleyball and enjoyed driving with her friends in her "notorious Jeep". She attended McGill University and graduated with a Dietitian Degree. She worked with Grace United Church as well as volunteering with the Allan Macpherson House in Napanee. She was married to John Lamb and had two children, David and Linda. Ann's obituary notes that her cottage in Napanee, where this first aid kit was located, was one of her favorite places to spend time alone or with her family. The final owner was Ann's daughter Linda, who donated the kit to the museum. |
