Object Story |
Frederick Chinneck established his jewelry, watch-making and optical business in Napanee in 1873. He relocated from Fergus, Ontario. As a youth, Frederick had apprenticed to a German watchmaker, and traveled extensively, working in many different towns and cities in Canada and the United States. His store, located in the Opera House block at East and Dundas streets Napanee, was reputed to be "one of the finest and most complete jewelry emporiums in this section of Ontario." His stock included "a full and complete assortment of clocks, fine gold and silver watches, diamonds, precious stones loose and mounted in rings, pins, jewelry in solid gold and gold filled, sterling silver and silver-plated ware, novelties and optical goods." Mr. Chinneck was the sole agent for the Regina Watch. Optical work was also done "in the latest and most scientific manner." Eyes were tested free of charge. By 1883, the store had relocated to the south side of Dundas street and his son Arthur had joined him in the business by 1905. Frederick Chinneck died May 23, 1920 in his 74th year. He had been in business 43 years. Arthur died in 1926. |
