Object Story |
Brodie Helmets The Brodie helmet was used by the Canadian, British and American forces in the conflict, and was based on a medieval peasant foot-soldier's helmet. While providing somewhat inferior protection to the German Stahlhelm, the Brodie helmet was light and economical to produce. Context: During the first few months of 1914, protective headwear was not issued by any of the opposing forces. It was quickly discovered that the troops suffered a huge number of head wounds, due to the heavy use of artillery, the shells of which would be fused to burst in the air and project a cloud of steel fragments toward the ground. The introduction of the steel helmet translated to an immediate and dramatic reduction in head wounds. |
