Object Story |
This is a Stone & Collins Self-Acting Cheese Press. Patented in 1842, with several models available, it was a very popular press for making cheese on the farm or in the home. This one has been modified with crude wheels on the base. Long before the invention of refrigeration, milk was preserved by making it into butter or cheese. Beginning in the mid-1800s, dairy farmers in Ontario started organizing into co-operatives which built cheese factories in farming communities. This press is from the farm of William Madden east of Napanee. |
