Object Story |
These shoes were worn by Doris Vesterfelt (nee Wells) whose family lived in the Camden area. Doris' husband Bill Vesterfelt, worked at the Strathcona Paper Company. Doris died in 2013 and these shoes were donated to the museum shortly after by her sister. The shoes are in the Mary Jane style. The iconic style of foot wear is characterized by blunt toes and a single strap and classically a flat sole, though more recent styles have had higher heels. The shoe style was made popular by the New York Herald comic strip "Buster Brown" created by Richard F. Outcault in 1902. This comic strip featured both the main male character Buster Brown and female character Mary Jane wearing this style of shoe. Up until the 1960's they were primarily worn by children. |
