Rectangular wooden back panel with arched top and a small red open topped barrel attached to the front. Back panel is stamped "VAN LUVEN BROS" above smaller text "WE SELL//The Best of Everything", "We Give You//FULL MEASURE//Full WEIGHT//LOW PRICES" and "MOSCOW". Drilled hole in the centre of the top arch, 1cm in diameter. There are smaller drilled holes in the middle of stamped text and at each bottom corner. |

The Moscow General Store was started by Zara VanLuven, who was born in Moscow Ontario, August 19, 1827. Zara went to Kingston Grammar School. After he graduated and a school was built in moscow Zara was established as the teacher, a position he would keep for three years. During this time he married a young women, Martha Potter, the daughter of one of the principle supporters of the school. After they married Zara went into the merchant business purchasing the small corner store previously owned by John Crommer, who went on to become Moscow's first postmaster. The pair had four children; Alberta Augusta (1855), Zara Augusta (b.1856) and twins Everton Leonard and Egerton Leander (b. 1858). The twins became partners in the general store and kept it running at least until 1918. |
