Object Story |
The banner was made by Coral Burdy Carroll (nee Doyle). She was born in Richmond Township, March 18, 1908. Her parents were Robert Edward Doyle and Nellie Doyle (nee Hanes). At the age of 18 Coral married Sidney Allan Carroll in Tamworth. Her husband Allan, was born in 1903 in Sheffield Township. Coral was president of the Addington District Woman's Institute between 1963-1966, It was in this period that the banner was made. The Addington District Woman's Institute was created in 1914 and continued until 1993. The district was comprised of several different branches in different combinations across time; these included; Enterprise, Yarker-Colebrook, Newburgh, Fifth lake, Centreville, Croydon, Moscow, Camden-East, Tamworth, Reidville, Cloyne, and Denbigh. The first Women's Institute created in Ontario, was started in Stoney Creek, in February 1897. This institute's objective was to improve women's skills in the art of homemaking and child care. Since then their mission has shifted with the times. Some of the objectives that the branches of the Women's Institute work toward includes: initiate programs to strengthen families and communities, interpret and record local history, and advocate for change such as appeal for improved life skills training in schools. |
