Object Story |
This pillow sham was made by Elva E. Clancy (nee Loyst), in approximately 1989. She was born in 1913 in Arden Ontario to William Elmore Loyst and Sarah Belle Lutze. Elva worked at the post office in Arden. December 13, 1934 Elva married William John Clancy (1909-1998). The couple moved to Bradford Ontario to find work and their daughter Helen was born there. In 1936. The family returned to the area when they moved back to Kingston and had their daughter Janet. Several more moves followed in the search for work, a third daughter Gertrude was born in Henderson. The family settled in Napanee as farmers and added two more children to their family, Earl and Ronald. After her kids had begun to grow up, Elva found work in several different places around Napanee such as at Rosebay dairy. She was known to always be doing something, with quilting and crocheting being favorites. She won many awards at the Centreville and Odessa fairs for entries into craft competitions and baking. This explaining where the numerous ribbons required to make this piece came from. Elva passed away December 23, 1999 in Napanee Ontario. The Odessa fair was originally started by the Ernestown Agricultural Society in 1835. The fair has been held at its current location since 1912. The fair started out as a market where farmers could sell their best livestock. Before long it transitioned into an annual event where new farming methods could be shared and encouraged, furthermore it got the community out and together. The fair acquired a carnival air and a celebratory feel, however even today agriculture remains at the core of the Odessa fair. Presently the fair includes tractor pulls, parades, animal judging, and much more. |
