Object Story |
This racket, dating to circa 1920, belonged to the family of Dr. James Allan Walters. Dr. Walters was born July 21, 1906. His parents were Charles Walters, and Stella Grace Walters (nee Wagar), both of whom were born in the County of Lennox and Addington. As of 1921 he had two younger siblings; Charles A Walters (b. 1910) and Margaret E. Walters (b.1915).The family lived in Napanee in 1921, on Pearl St. Both the Walters and the Wagar families were descendants from United Empire Loyalists (U.E.L.), a fact in which Dr. Walters was very interested. It is known that on his paternal side he was descended from Cyrenius Park, who immigrated to North America in 1630, as the secretary to Governor John Winthrop. Dr. Walters published several papers on the subject of the U.E.L. settlement of the region focusing on the Bay of Quinte area. He spoke at many U.E.L. events and was a prominent figure in that community. Tennis was a popular activity early in Napanee's History with evidence that Napanee had a prominent Tennis club as early as 1899. Tennis matches continued to be popular into the 1920's. |
