Object Story |
The music stand by GIBBARD Furniture Co. ("G.F." on it's back) was given to Mrs. Charles Walters (Stella Wagar) when she was a young girl, 1895, by her father Ephraim Wagar who himself worked for Gibbard's in their wood working shop. She kept her music in it continually as it stood beside her piano in her home on Pearl St. South, Napanee and East St. Napanee. Edwardian furniture designers were moving away from the heavy, dark character of Victorian designs, incorporating elements from earlier styles into designs with a lighter feel. This piece is stamped on the back "G.F. Co." When John Gibbard opened his cabinet shop in 1860, the business was known as "John Gibbard, Cabinetmaker." When his son William joined the business in 1868, the business became known as "Gibbard and Son." As the business developed into a full-fledged company, the name was changed again, in 1892, to the "Gibbard Furniture Company Limited." |
