Object Story |
The markings give valuable details about the shell and when it was used. Maked "Ypres 1915" has markings indicating it has been fired twice. The shell is stamped on the baseplate "4/16" indicating that it was made in April 1916, and thus could not have been fired at the battles of Ypres, which occurred in 1914-1915. These casings are from British 18 Pounder Field Guns. The 18-Pdr was the standard field artillery piece of the British and Canadian forces. It was common to make such commemorative pieces and other artwork during and just after the war from the mountains of used brass casings. |
