Object Story |
These pants were owned by Charles Walters Sr. and were worn as a part of his performing outfit in the Walters' Family Orchestra. Charles Augustus Walters was born to James Walters and Margaret Walters (nee Cunningham) on January 13th, 1879 in Napanee. In 1905 Charles began working for Seymour Power and Light Company as a meter-reader eventually being promoted to a lineman and finally a manager. When the Seymour Power and Light Company was sold to Napanee Hydro in 1916, Charles went with it becoming a manager at Napanee Hydro and then Napanee Public Utilities when it was renamed. When Ontario Hydro began putting up power lines in rural Greater Napanee, Charles took a second job and managed the rural areas for the company. In January of 1961 Charles retired from both jobs. In his personal life Charles married his wife Stella G. Wagar on January 16th, 1906 in Napanee. The two then had their first son James Allan Walters in 1906, their second son Charles Augustus Walters Jr. in 1910 and their only daughter Margaret Edith Walters in 1914. A year after their daughter was born Stella and Charles Sr. started their dance orchestra, the Walters Family Orchestra, with two other unknown members. The band played between Belleville and Kingston ranging genres from swing to gospel to popular tunes of the time. At their peak the Walters Family Orchestra contained a 12 piece set including Charles Sr. on the drums, Stella on the piano and their son James on the saxophone. In 1932 the Walters' Family Orchestra disbanded leaving the instruments with the Walters family. Charles Sr. and Stella lived in Napanee for the remainder of their lives. Charles Sr. passed away on June 11th, 1963 at the age of 84. Stella passed away 15 years later on July 6th, 1978 at the age of 94 survived by her 3 children and 4 grandchildren. |
