Object Story |
This coat was tailored by Walsh & Derry tailors in Kingston sometime between 1923 and 1940. The tailoring firm started as a tailoring shop called "Walsh's" at 160 Princess St. The firm soon combined with another tailoring shop called Crawford's to become "Crawford & Walsh tailoring". As of 1916, the two marketed themselves as a civil and military tailor in order to fulfill the growing war effort during World War One. In 1920, the firm moved to a new location at Bagot and Brock St and celebrated 35 years in business. Three years, later on March 12th, Edwin Walsh of Crawford & Walsh, who had been running the shop alone, went into business with Jack Derry renaming the tailoring shop to "Walsh & Derry, Merchant Tailors and Importers". The tailoring shop was known to import materials from across the world which made their practice highly popular during the time. During his time as a tailor, Jack Derry was a council member of the St. Lawrence baseball league as well as a manager of the Circle Six baseball league between 1924 and 1926. He was also a member of Napanee Lodge no. 86 of the Independent Order of Oddfellows where he was a past grand of the lodge and a member for over 18 years. While with the Oddfellows Jack was presented a Silver Tea Service in 1923 and a Veterans Jewel in 1926 for being a veteran member of the lodge. His business partner, Edwin Walsh, was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Kingston where he served as a previous chairman of the organization and a (financial) booster of many of their events. Edwin also ran for school trustee in the Frontenac ward in 1906. It is also recorded that he had a daughter who married Cecil Ney in Ottawa. The two later had twins together around 1922. Both Edwin and Jack competed in curling, bowling and softball together throughout their time as business partners in Napanee and Kingston. |
