Wooden doll with china head, hair wig, painted cast metal hands and feet, dress made to resemble one worn with a crinoline and is patterned with a small flowered design, in cotton. Under the dress are two pieces of white cotton underwear. The arms and legs are jointed at the elbows and knees. Face has glass brown eyes, and painted on eyebrows, eyelashes, lips. |

This doll belonged to Edith Matilda Purdy as a child. Edith was born in Bath August 26, 1855 to Hazard Wilcox Purdy (1809-1897) a local farmer and his wife Caroline Elizabeth (Bristol) Purdy (1824-1914). Edith Matilda was baptized January 7th 1856 in a Wesleyan Methodist Church in Ernesttown Township. By the age of ten Edith had 2 elder siblings and 4 younger siblings. At the age of 15 she was still attending school. On September 3, 1878 Edith married Benjamin Brisco in Bath. The couple had two children Mary Edna Brisco (b.1979) and Isaac Benjamin (Hazard) Brisco (b.1881). Mary Edna went on to marry Harry Miller Johnston June 19, 1900. Together Mary Edna and Harry Miller Johnston had two daughters Mildred Johnston (1901-2000) and Edith Dorothy Johnston (1903-1983). Mildred Johnston married Howard LeRoy Armstrong October 9, 1926 in Adolphustown. The doll was passed down in the family to Edith Matilda Purdy's granddaughter Mildred Armstrong (Johnston) before it came to the museum. |
