Tunic, military - made of wool, woven felt - woven felt is blue at edges of cuffs and inside of collar beige woven felt is used for lining in the dress part below the waist. In the upper part of the body above the waist is square quilt-like padded silk lining inner arm has silk striped lining -shoulder straps -3 coil gold coloured straps -top of strap is held by a brass button -a crown and a star are on the strap which are appropriate badges for a Lieutenant Colonel -the cuff decoration is also the proper signia for a Lieutenant Colonel in gold coloured cord -the knot on top of the insignia is an Austrian dnot. The collar has a 1/2" of curled gold coloured cold -the dnot on top of the insignia is an Austrian knot - the collar has a 1/2" of curled gold coloured lace and a fine line of bold coloured Russia Braid along the bottom -the buttons are brass with Canada Militia written around the circumference of the button and a beaver in the centre -on the back side of the buttons, inscribed in them is "John Martin and Co. Object Story |
This tunic was worn by Robert Cox during his service in the 47th Frontenac Regiment. Robert Cox was born to Lucy and Edward Cox in Ireland around 1849 before moving to Enterprise, Ontario in the following months. In 1881, Robert married Alice French after which they had three kids and settled down in Enterprise themselves where Robert owned a store and repaired watches. Robert was known for being a military enthusiast throughout his childhood leading him to join the 47th Frontenac Regiment around 1899. During his time in the militia he fought in the South African War where this tunic was worn. He continued his service until 1905 as a Lieutenant Colonel, after which he returned to his family. Beyond his service, Robert was also a mason of a Victoria Lodge where he was a worshipful master in 1886, 1887 and 1895. He was also known to be a devote community member and was a part of many local organizations. Robert passed away in 1913 at the age of 64. Alice, his wife, passed away 16 years later in 1931 at the age of 71. The two are buried together in Centreville United Church Cemetery. |
